Characteristics of wastewater

Linkedin Blog post

Wastewater can have varying characteristics depending on its source, and it may require different treatment processes before being discharged. These characteristics are typically categorized into physical, chemical, and biological parameters:

  1. Physical Characteristics:
  • Electrical Conductivity: This parameter indicates the salt content in the wastewater.
  • Total Dissolved Solids: These include inorganic salts and small amounts of organic matter dissolved in the water.
  • Suspended Solids: These are solid particles that are suspended in the water but not dissolved.
  1. Chemical Characteristics:
  • Dissolved Oxygen: It measures the amount of oxygen present in the water.
  • Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD): BOD indicates the amount of oxygen required by aerobic microorganisms to decompose the organic matter in a water sample within a specific time period.
  • Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD): COD is the measure of the oxygen equivalent of the organic matter content in a sample, which can be oxidized by a strong chemical oxidant.
  • Total Organic Compounds: These represent the overall concentration of organic compounds in the wastewater.
  1. Biological Characteristics:
  • Total Coliform (T.C): This parameter encompasses both fecal coliforms and common soil microorganisms, serving as a broad indicator of possible water contamination.
  • Fecal Coliform (F.C): F.C is a specific indicator of water contamination with fecal matter, often detected through the presence of bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli).
  • Helminths: Helminth analysis is used to detect the presence of worm eggs in water, which can be indicative of fecal contamination and potential health risks.
